Medical expenses related to the condition can be claimed on your income tax. Remember to include the purchase, installation and maintenance of adaptive equipment. For example grab bars and renovations to a bathroom can be claimed, as can the cost of installation. Make sure the work orders clearly state the work was done for amelioration of disability. Adapted computer programs which allow independent access are eligible. Don’t forget to include the cost of ‘set-up’ and training to use the computer. Walkers, special adapted add ons, canes, special lifting chairs etc are other ideas of eligible medical expenses.
For more information on medical expenses for yourself, spouse or common-law partner, and your dependent children born in 1997 or later, visit the Canada Revenue Agency.
